Gary Slater Obituary

With deep sadness and loving remembrance, we share that Gary Slater, 73, of Butler, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born on June 17, 1952, in Butler, Gary was the son of the late George and Norma Brown Slater.

Gary lived life fully, boldly, and entirely on his own terms. He was an eccentric, artistic, colorful, and free-spirited soul whose one-of-a-kind personality brought energy, character, and unforgettable warmth to the lives of those around him.

He was self-employed in the construction industry and proudly owned a business with his wife, Cher, for 36 years. Side by side, they built not only homes and custom projects throughout the Butler area, but also a life marked by hard work, dedication, and shared purpose.

Gary also had his own autobody shop, where he found joy in painting and restoring vehicles with remarkable care, creativity, and his own distinctive flair.

He loved to dress up and will be remembered for his bold sense of style, his colorful spirit, and the many hats he wore so proudly.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years Cheryl “Cher” Buck Slater; daughter Nicole (Chad) Church; grandchildren Montana (Shane McElroy) Vanderzee, Maddox Church, and Marlowe Church; his siblings Georgia Slater, Gloria Yaracs, Gail Slater, Gavon Slater; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Glenda Kelly.
